12  So teach us to number our days ♦︎
   that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
13  Turn again, O Lord; how long will you delay? ♦︎
   Have compassion on your servants.
14  Satisfy us with your loving-kindness in the morning, ♦︎
   that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15  Give us gladness for the days you have afflicted us, ♦︎
   and for the years in which we have seen adversity.
16  Show your servants your works, ♦︎
   and let your glory be over their children.
17  May the gracious favour of the Lord our God be upon us; ♦︎
   prosper our handiwork; O prosper the work of our hands.

Amos 3: 13 - 4: 5

13 Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,
   says the Lord God, the God of hosts:
14 On the day I punish Israel for its transgressions,
   I will punish the altars of Bethel,
and the horns of the altar shall be cut off
   and fall to the ground.
15 I will tear down the winter house as well as the summer house;
   and the houses of ivory shall perish,
and the great houses* shall come to an end,

says the Lord.

4Hear this word, you cows of Bashan
   who are on Mount Samaria,
who oppress the poor, who crush the needy,
   who say to their husbands, ‘Bring something to drink!’
2 The Lord God has sworn by his holiness:
   The time is surely coming upon you,
when they shall take you away with hooks,
   even the last of you with fish-hooks.
3 Through breaches in the wall you shall leave,
   each one straight ahead;
   and you shall be flung out into Harmon,*

says the Lord.
4 Come to Bethel—and transgress;
   to Gilgal—and multiply transgression;
bring your sacrifices every morning,
   your tithes every three days;
5 bring a thank-offering of leavened bread,
   and proclaim freewill-offerings, publish them;
   for so you love to do, O people of Israel!

says the Lord God.

Matthew 15: 1-9

The Tradition of the Elders

15Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.’ 3He answered them, ‘And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4For God said,* “Honour your father and your mother,” and, “Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.” 5But you say that whoever tells father or mother, “Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God”,* then that person need not honour the father.* 6So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word* of God. 7You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:
8 “This people honours me with their lips,
   but their hearts are far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
   teaching human precepts as doctrines.”
